Characteristic features:
Colour:

Head and body silver, greenish blue above, silver white below; several large brown or yellow oval spots on sides; opercular spot dusky; dorsal and anal fins generally pale brown with dark tips; pelvic fins whitish; caudal fin dusky brown with darker trailing edge.

Size:

Up to 70 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Found around oceanic islands, in lagoons and seaward reefs, from the surface to 170 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds on small benthic crustaceans. Adults are pelagic and are found singularly, in pairs or in small schools.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught mainly by hook-and-line and trawls.

Similar species:

A distinct species, easily identifiable by its scaleless breast area not extending past pelvic-fin origin and having several large yellow or brown oval-shaped spots on sides.
