Characteristic features:
Colour:

Head and body dark brown with irregular pale markings, becoming paler below.

Size:

Up to 50 cm TL.

Distribution:

West Central Pacific in tropical and subtropical waters.

Habitat:

Coastal sand, sponge and weed bottoms, from 60 to 180 m depth.

Abalistes stellatus

Abalistes stellatus differs in having a caudal fin without filamentous lobes (vs. upper and lower lobes often filamentous); no grooves on cheeck (vs. 3–4 longitudinal grooves) and small yellow spots above and larger yellow spots below (vs. no spots on body).
