Characteristic features:
Colour:

5 dark-brown bars on body partly divided by a narrow pale bar, caudal fin with blackish spots, and no patches of small dark spots on body.

Size:

Up to 28 cm TL.

Distribution:

West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Silty and muddy bottoms, from 10 to 80 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught in trawls.

Similar species:

Epinephelus amblycephalus differs in having no distinct dark spots on posterior dorsal fin, anal-fin lobe and caudal fin (vs. distinct dark spots on these fins).

Epinephelus kupangensis differs in having bars more uniformly dark (vs. dark bars with lighter shades giving the appearance of a ‘double-bar’); caudal fin plain (vs. spotted) and a longer head length 2.0–2.3 in SL (vs. shorter head length, 2.4–2.6 in SL).
