Characteristic features:
Colour:

Greyish green, scales on upper sides with white spots, edge of operculum and pectoral axil red.

Size:

Up to 50 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific, in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Over sand and coral reefs, from 10 to 50 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on crustaceans and molluscs, but also polycheates, echinoderms and fishes.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by handline, traps, trawls, beach seines, and gill nets.

Lethrinus ornatus

Lethrinus ornatus differs in having 5 or 6 orange stripes on sides (vs. no orange stripes on sides); dorsal profile above eye convex (vs. nearly straight) and posterior edge of opercle and preopercle bright red (vs. dark brown).
