Characteristic features:
  1. Scutes on caudal peduncle
  2. Body oval
  3. Non-scaled area of breast extending to pectoral-fin base
  4. 25–30 dorsal-fin soft rays
  5. Roof and floor of mouth white and rest of mouth black
  6. Fins mostly pale
Colour:

Body silver; roof and floor of mouth white, rest of mouth black, fins mostly pale.

Size:

Up to 35 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West and Central Pacific.

Habitat:

Close to reefs, from 20 to 130 m depth.

Biology:

Forms small schools. Little else is known regarding the biology and ecology of this species.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with bottom trawls, longlines and traps.

Uraspis secunda

Uraspis secunda differs in having a naked breast area extending uninterrupted to naked pectoral-fin base (vs. a non-scaled breast area extending to pectoral-fin base).
