Characteristic features:
  1. Dorsal fin with 11 spines and 14 or 15 soft rays
  2. Caudal fin rounded
  3. Preopercle corner with 2–5 enlarged serrae
  4. Faint dark diagonal stripes on head
Colour:

Body uniformly pale brown above and whitish ventrally, 3 faint dark diagonal stripes on head.

Size:

Up to 43 cm TL.

Distribution:

West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Soft bottoms, from 40 to 235 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with trawls and vertical longlines.

Similar species:

A distinct species, easily identified by having the head and body pale brown dorsally, shading to whitish pink below and 3 faint dark brown stripes from the eye to rear of operculum (fading after death).
