Characteristic features:
Colour:

Head and body greyish brown with 2 paler horizontal stripes with black edges and dots, the upper stripe running from above the eye posterior dorsal fin and the lower running from below the eye to the caudal fin; dorsal and caudal fins with black spots and streaks.

Size:

Up to 157 cn TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Sandy and low rocky areas, from 20 to 230 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, longlines, trawls, and traps.

Epinephelus epistictus differs in head and body pale brown to greenish-grey with small brownish-black spots on upper part of body (vs. uniformly grey with 2 paler horizontal stripes with black edges and dots, the upper stripe running from above the eye posterior dorsal fin and the lower running from below the eye to the caudal fin).

Epinephelus radiatus differs in having upper edge of operculum nearly straight (vs. distinctly convex); posterior nostril 2–3 times larger than anterior nostril (vs. nostrils subequal) and small adults, 20–40cm SL, with 5 dark edged pale bands and large adults; 40–50 cm SL, with dark edges of bands replaced by a series of dark spots (vs. head and body pale brown to greenish grey with small brownish black spots on upper part of body).
