Characteristic features:
Colour:

Body yellow becoming silvery below; head and lips brownish yellow. Juveniles frequently with 5 yellow-brown vertical bars.

Size:

Up to 60 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific, in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Rocky bottoms, from 90 to 340 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on fishes and larger invertebrates. Little is known about the biology and ecology of this species.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught mainly with bottom longlines and deep handlines.

Similar species:

A distinct species, clearly separable from other Lutjanid species by its upper lip with a medial fleshy protrusion and strong dorsal- and anal-fin spines.
