Characteristic features:
Colour:

Head and body dull yellowish orange to brownish red, usually 5 faint dark bars on body; dorsal fin greenish brown; soft portion of dorsal fin, and dorsal caudal fin darker; other fins orange to brownish red.

Size:

Up to 50 cm TL.

Distribution:

Scattered throughout Indo-West and Central Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs and outer reef slopes from 20 to 220 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with handlines and vertical longlines.

Similar species:

A distinct species, easily identified by having a head and body orange-brown with 5 faint dark bars, a greenish-brown dorsal fin, no spots and a truncate caudal fin.
