Characteristic features:
Colour:

Adults brownish red with pale blotches (no bands) and numerous dark-edged blue ocelli on head, body and fins.

Size:

Up to 30 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs and vegetated areas, from 1 to 50 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, gill nets, spear, and in traps.

Cephalopholis argus differs in having 9 anal-fin rays (vs. 8); often having 5–6 pale bars on posterior body (vs. faint pale bars along whole body) and a large pale area over chest (vs. no pale area on chest).
