Characteristic features:

Variation between individuals are common within this species. Fin colour and bands or patterns on the body can vary between specimens.

Colour:

Silvery with brown-edged scales, series of wavy blue lines on snout and cheek, a narrow brown bar across base of pectoral fins, fins yellowish.

Size:

Up to 80 cm TL.

Important conditions and life stages:

Gymnocranius grandoculis juveniles have transversal dark bars on their sides, with the 4th dark bar running from thr 6th dorsal-fin spine too the anal-fin origin.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Sand, rubble and rocky bottoms, from 15 to 100 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds on bottom dwelling invertebrates and small fishes.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with bottom trawls and bottom longlines.

Gymnocranius elongatus differs in having deeply forked caudal fin, the median rays shorter than eye diameter (vs. moderately forked, median rays longer than eye diameter); no blue markings on snout and cheek (vs. horizontal wavy blue lines no snout and cheek) and lower edge of eye level with snout tip and middle of caudal-fin fork (vs. lower edge of eye well above line from snout tip to middle of caudal-fin fork).

Gymnocranius frenatus differs in having a maximum length of up to 35 cm TL (vs. 80 cm TL); wavy blue lines on snout and cheek oblique and snout with prominent blue-edged yellow band from front of eye to above upper lip, encompassing nostrils (vs. wavy, horizontal blue lines on snout and cheek only) and body silvery with 5–7 narrow, irregular dark bars on sides (vs. body of adults silvery, juveniles <20 cm SL frequently with dark bar under eye and 5 or 6 irregular dark bars on side of body).

Gymnocranius microdon differs in having vertically elongate blue spots on snout and cheek, and body silvery (vs. horizontal wavy blue lines on snout and cheek for specimens >20 cm TL, or a dark bar under eyes and 5 or 6 irregular dark bars on side of body for specimens <20 cm SL) and body depth 2.5–3 times in standard length (vs. 2.4–2.5).
