Characteristic features:
Colour:

Greenish-brown to dark brown; first dorsal fin dark to blackish, with a darker blotch between 3rd and 4th spines; buccal and branchial cavity usually black.

Size:

Up to 30 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific and off East Africa in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Benthopelagic on upper slopes, from 200 to 570 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds on small fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods.

Lepidocybium flavobrunneum differs in having a large keel flanked by 2 smaller keels on either side of caudal peduncle (vs. keels absent) and lateral line single and extremely undulating (vs. double, the lower lateral line running near ventral contour).
