Characteristic features:
Colour:

2 vertical curved dark bands on head near gill opening, white area from mouth to anal fin, rest of body pale grey to brownish.

Size:

Up to 24 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs, from 3 to 90 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by gillnets, traps and drive-in nets.

Sufflamen chrysopterum

Sufflamen chrysopterum differs in having caudal fin with a broad white posterior margin (vs. uniformly dark) and ventral area from mouth to anal fin brown (vs. white).
