Characteristic features:
Colour:

Blue dorsally grading to silvery white below; a broad yellow stripe from upper margin of eye to caudal peduncle; a black spot on upper edge of operculum.

Size:

Up to 24 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coastal waters over soft bottoms, to 50 m depth. Sometimes enters brackish of freshwater areas.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on small invertebrates but also small fishes. Forms large schools close the seafloor.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with seines, bottom trawls, traps and gillnets.

Selar boops differs in having an adipose eyelid completely covering eye except for a vertical slit centred on pupil (vs. adipose eyelid moderately developed on posterior half of eye); a small, elongate blackish opercular spot (vs. prominent black opercular spot, merging onto shoulder) and a shoulder girdle margin under operculum with 2 papillae (vs. smooth and without papillae).
