Characteristic features:
Colour:

Adults pale bluish grey with numerous irregular black spots and streaks (mostly small).

Size:

Up to 100 cm TL.

Distribution:

West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs, from 2 to 150 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, traps, trawls, and lift nets.

Epinephelus undulosus differs in having anterior and posterior nostrils subequal in size (vs. posterior nostrils 2–3 times larger than anterior nostrils); dorsal fin membranes not, or only slightly incised (vs. deeply incised) and body covered in close-set brown-orange or reddish brown longitudinal stripes, sometimes breaking into series of spots (vs. body pale bluish grey with black dots and irregular larger black spots).
