Characteristic features:
Colour:

Whitish below and pale yellowish-brown above, separated by a distinct thin white or light blue line (sometimes bordered above by a thin orange line) which runs from pectoral fin base to caudal peduncle; upper and lower caudal fin lobes orange; a vertical orange bar on head from behind eye to pectoral fin base; alternating horizontal orange and blue lines sometimes present on cheek.

Size:

Up to 35 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Benthopelagic, occuring in deep seaward reefs from 15 to 200 m dpeth.

Biology:

Feeds on zooplankton.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by drive-in nets, gillnets and handlines.

Similar species:

A distinct species easily identifiable by having a white or pale blue line, sometimes bordered above by a thin orange line, running from pectoral-fin base to caudal peduncle, an orange vertical line behind eye and upper and lower caudal fin lobes orange.
