Characteristic features:

Uniformly dark brown to blackish, inside mouth reddish orange, caudal fin of juveniles with white posterior margin.

Size:

Up to 60 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs, from 3 to 60 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, spear, and probably in traps.

Cephalopholis sonnerati differs in having a caudal fin rounded (vs. truncate) and body mainly bright orange–red to yellowish brown (vs. uniformly dark brown to black).
