Characteristic features:
Colour:

Silver with narrow dark dotted lines along body; gill membranes black.

Size:

Up to 35 cm TL.

Distribution:

Circumglobal in offshore, tropical and subtropical waters.

Habitat:

Mesopelagic, oceanic, from 100 to 1,000 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on small fishes and crustaceans. Migrate upward at night to 100-200 m, forms schools at greater depths during the day.

Gempylus serpens differs in having a distance from anus to anal-fin origin less than or about equal to eye diameter (vs. much greater than eye diameter) and dorsal-fin elements >60 (vs. <56).
