Characteristic features:
Colour:

Dusky green to blue dorsally grading to grey to silvery below; 5–8 dark blotches on sides; dorsal and anal fins uniformly dusky.

Size:

Up to 120 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coastal waters near reefs and offshore islands, and occasionally in estuarine waters to 50 m depth.

Biology:

Adults feed primarily on fishes but also cephalopods, small invertebrates. Juveniles feed on the scales and skin tissues of other fish using specialised teeth. Occurs in small schools. The first spine on the second dorsal- and anal fins are venomous.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by drift set nets, gill nets, seines and hook-and-line.

Scomberoides lysan differs in having an upper jaw reaching level with or just beyond posterior margin of eye (vs. extending well beyond posterior margin of eye); 2 series of 6–8 dark blotches on sides (vs. a single series of 5–8 dark blotches on side) and dorsal-fin lobe abruptly blackish (vs. uniformly dusky).

Scomberoides tala differs in having the 4–8 dark blotches on side oblong in shape, most of which intersect lateral line (vs. 4–8 dark blotches on side round in shape, first 2 may intersect lateral line) and upper jaw often extending slightly beyond posterior margin of eye (vs. upper jaw extending well beyond posterior margin of eye).

Scomberoides tol differs in having an upper jaw not extending to posterior margin of eye (vs. upper jaw extending well beyond posterior margin of eye) and rear dorsal-fin lobe turning abruptly black (vs. dorsal fin uniformly dusky).
