Colour:

Pale reddish mottled with darker red and white, and 2 white subterminal lines on caudal fin.

Size:

Up to 22 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs, 15 to 110 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, gill nets, and in traps.

Cephalopholis urodeta differs in having 2 white lines extending from dorsal and ventral of hypural plate to rear caudal-fin margin (vs. 2 white lines following the rear corners of the caudal fin).

Cephalopholis leopardus differs in having body pale reddish with large orange spots (vs. mottled light and dark red with white); black saddle on caudal peduncle (vs. no saddle); dorsal and ventral caudal-fin tips white (vs. caudal fin with 2 white lines) and a dark line on upper caudal fin (vs. no dark line).
