Characteristic features:
Colour:

Silvery grey to brownish; fins with dark edges. Juveniles with dark vertical bars.

Size:

Up to 75 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Pelagic over soft bottoms, usually from 15 to 40 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds on zooplankton. Forms large schools, found at the bottom during the day and rising to near the surface at night.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught mainly with gill nets, but also boat seining and trawls.

Pampus argenteus differ in having lateral line strongly arched anteriorly (vs. weakly arched) and scutes and keel on caudal peduncle absent (vs. keel of scutes present).
