Ruvettus pretiosus differs in having a lateral line curved anteriorly above pectoral fin, then straight (vs. strongly undulating along entire length); scales very rough (vs. comparatively smooth); no keels on caudal peduncle (vs. a large keel flanked by 2 smaller keels on either side of caudal peduncle) and a midventral keel (vs. no midventral keel).
