Characteristic features:
Colour:

Grey-green dorsally grading into silvery white below; 2 series of 6–8 dark blotches on sides; rear half of dorsal-fin lobe becoming dark.

Size:

Up to 67 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Adults are found in clear, inshore and coastal waters to 100 m depth. Juveniles are found in inshore brackish and more turbid waters.

Biology:

Adults feed on fishes and small crustaceans, juveniles feed on the scales and skin tissues of other fish using specialised teeth. Occurs singly or in small schools, found at the bottom during the day and rising to near the surface at night. The first spine on the second dorsal- and anal fins are venomous.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by drift set nets, gill nets seines and hook-and-line.
