Characteristic features:
Colour:

Body greyish pink with many fine wavy dark longitudinal lines, head finely spotted.

Size:

Up to 75 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Offshore banks, from 15 to 90 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, vertical long lines, and trawls.

Epinephelus cyanopodus differs in having posterior nostrils 2–3 times larger than anterior nostrils (vs. nostrils subequal in size); dorsal fin membranes deeply incised (vs. not, or only slightly incised) and body pale bluish-grey with black dots and irregular larger black spots (vs. body covered in closely-set brown-orange or reddish brown longitudinal stripes, sometimes breaking into series of spots).
