Characteristic features:
Colour:

Body dark brown, dark-edged blue spots confined to head and anterior body, sometimes with pale bars posteriorly on body.

Size:

Up to 26 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Shallow silty reefs, from the surface to 20 m depth.

Cephalopholis boenak

Cephalopholis boenak differs in having no spots on head or body (vs. head and anterior body with dark edged blue spots); a dark opercular spot (vs. no dark opercular spot) and 7 or 8 darker bars on body (vs. sometimes with paler bars on posterior body).
