Characteristic features:
Colour:

Dark brownish to yellowish brown with many irregular dark bluish longitudinal lines on head, body and fins.

Size:

Up to 34 cm TL.

Distribution:

West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Shallow dead and silty reefs, from 1 to 30 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, gill net, traps, and in trawls.

Similar species:

Cephalopholis polleni
Harlequin grouper

Cephalopholis polleni

Cephalopholis polleni differs in having caudal fin truncate to slightly emarginate (vs. rounded).
