Characteristic features:
Colour:

Silvery grey with orange–brown stripes on sides, yellowish blotch below rear of dorsal fin.

Size:

Up to 30 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West & Central Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs, from 3 to 20 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on benthic invertebrates and also small fish. Found in solitary or in groups of up to 100.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with spears, traps, gill nets, and handlines

Similar species:

A distinct species, easily identifiable by having a combination of pointed caudal-fin lobes, 8 or 9 anal-fin soft rays, 15 pectoral-fin rays, orange–brown stripes on sides and a yellowish blotch below rear of soft dorsal fin.
