Characteristic features:
Colour:

Soft portion of dorsal fin dark basally with pale outer margin, caudal fin with distinct lunar-like black marking, and chin and undersurface bright yellow.

Size:

Up to 35 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs, from 10 to 30 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on fishes and benthic crustaceans. Lunartail snapper are usually solitary, but occasionally found in small groups. Estimations regarding size or age at maturity are unknown. Maximum age is unknown.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with handlines, traps and gill nets.

Lutjanus fulvus

Lutjanus fulvus is similar in having anal and paired fins bright yellow, but differs in having a well-developed and deep preopercular notch (vs. poorly developed); outer third of soft dorsal fin blackish (vs. soft portion of dorsal fin dark basally with pale outer margin); caudal fin blackish (vs. distinct lunar-like black marking) and uniform tan to silvery white (vs. reddish pink over most of body, chin and undersurface bright yellow).
