Characteristic features:
Colour:

Head and body brownish and entirely covered with close-set yellowish brown spots; dorsal fin spotted; upper third of caudal fin spotted and lower two-thirds uniformly dusky, and anal and paired fins not spotted.

Size:

Up to 76 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Rocky reefs from 1 to 50 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, longlines, and trawls.

Epinephelus areolatus

Epinephelus areolatus differs in having the caudal fin uniformly spotted (vs. lower 2 thirds of caudal fin dusky); pectoral and pelvic fins with dark spots (vs. dusky) and caudal-fin posterior edge with white margin (vs. without white margin).
