Characteristic features:
Colour:

Head and body brown; body with dense white spotting often forming wavy lines, inconspicuous black stripe over jaw; paired fins greyish-brown, other fins brown with small white spots and streaks and posterior margins black.

Size:

Up to 31 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral and rocky reefs from 5 to 25 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, spear, and traps.

Epinephelus coeruleopunctatus

Epinephelus coeruleopunctatus differs in having upper edge of operculum straight to weakly convex (vs. strongly convex); pectoral-fin rays 17–19 (vs. 15–17) and median fins blackish without white margin (vs. median fins blackish with white margin).
