Characteristic features:
Colour:

Pale brownish with irregular dark bars on sides, almost square black blotch above pectoral fins.

Size:

Up to 25 cm TL.

Distribution:

East Indian & West Pacific, in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Over sand and seagrass bottoms, from 5 to 25 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on crustaceans and small fishes.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by shore seine.

Similar species:

A distinct species, easily identifiable by having the second dorsal-fin spine distinctly longer than other dorsal-fin spines and a pair of canines in lower jaw substantially curved outwards.
