Characteristic features:
Colour:

Pale brownish with 5 or 6 orange stripes on sides.

Size:

Up to 40 cm TL.

Distribution:

East Indian & West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Shallow coastal habitats and coral reefs, from 5 to 30 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, polycheates and small fishes.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by trap, handline, shore seine and trawl.

Lethrinus lentjan differs in having no orange stripes on sides (vs. 5 or 6 orange stripes on sides); dorsal profile above eye nearly straight (vs. convex) and posterior edge of operculum dark brown (vs. posterior edge of opercle and preopercle bright red).

Lethrinus obsoletus differs in having a maxilla with a distinct knob (vs. smooth, sometimes with a longitudinal ridge); dorsal profile sloping (vs. steep) and posterior edge of operculum dark brown (vs. posterior edge of opercle and preopercle bright red).
