Characteristic features:
  1. Profile of head relatively steep and angular
  2. Breast completely scaly
  3. Adipose eyelid moderately developed
  4. 23–30 gill rakers on first gill arch
  5. Upper end of operculum frequently with small black spot

 

A distinct species, easily identifiable by having a uniform grey-brown body colouration and head profile steep and angular.

Colour:

Head, body and fins uniform grey to brown; center of fins and lateral line scutes dark brown to black; upper end of operculum frequently with small black spot.

Size:

Up to 73 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Found in clear, offshore waters from 25 to 65 m. Rarely found in shallow waters.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on fishes.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught mainly by hook-and-line but also traps and gill nets.

Similar species:
