Characteristic features:
Colour:

Marbled yellowish brown with 5 irregular broken flower-like bars, head densely covered with many small dark-brown spots.

Size:

Up to 100 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral and rocky reefs, from 1 to 60 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, traps, and spear.

Epinephelus malabaricus differs in having dorsal head profile convex (vs. distinctly indented at eyes); preopercle with large serrations at the angle (vs. finely serrate); anterior and posterior nostrils subequal (vs. posterior nostrils 4–7 times larger than anterior nostrils in adults) and no distinct black saddle patch on rear half of caudal peduncle in adults (vs. distinct caudal peduncle spot in adults).
