Characteristic features:
Colour:

Body light greyish yellow, scale centres darker yellowish grey, anterior ventral head orange-yellow, soft dorsal and anal fins with orange outer margins.

Size:

Up to 60 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs, to 50 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds on sea urchins, crustaceans, molluscs and tunicates. Mainly solitary.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught by gillnets, traps, handlines and drive-in nets.

Balistoides viridescens differs in having cheek scaled (vs. anterior part of cheek without scales, the posterior part with scales smaller than those on body) and outer margins of soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins blackish (vs. outer margins of those fins orange-yellow).

Pseudobalistes fuscus

Pseudobalistes fuscus differs in having no scale ridges on caudal peduncle (vs. 5 or 6 longitudinal scale ridges) and soft dorsal and anal fins elevated anteriorly (vs. rounded anteriorly) and soft dorsal and anal fins brown (vs. outer margins of these fins orange).
