Characteristic features:
Colour:

Body uniformly pale brown above and whitish ventrally, small dark spots scattered on body, and a single faint dark stripe extending from eye to edge of operculum.

Size:

Up to 80 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Soft and rocky bottoms, from 70 to 290 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with trawls and handlines.

Epinephelus latifasciatus

Epinephelus latifasciatus differs in being uniformly grey with 2 paler horizontal stripes with black edges and dots, the upper stripe running from above the eye posterior dorsal fin and the lower running from below the eye to the caudal fin (vs. head and body pale brown to greenish grey with small brownish black spots on upper part of body).

Epinephelus radiatus differs in having posterior nostrils 2–3 times larger than anterior nostrils (vs. nostrils subequal in size) and small adults, 20–40cm SL, with 5 dark edged pale bands and large adults, 40–50 cm SL, with dark edges of bands replaced by a series of dark spots (vs. head and body pale brown to greenish grey with small brownish black spots on upper part of body).
