Characteristic features:
Colour:

Greenish or reddish brown with a series of curved bluish bars on body, 3–5 blue lines on head, caudal peduncle sometimes paler with a black spot.

Size:

Up to 40 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Deep coral reefs, from 15 to 120 m depth.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with hook-and-line, gill nets, and spear.

Cephalopholis argus

Cephalopholis argus differs in having a long head, its length 2.4–2.7 times in standard length (vs. short, its length 2.9–3.2 in standard length); pectoral fins distinctly longer than pelvic fins (vs. slightly longer than pelvic fins), caudal fin rounded (vs. truncate to slightly emarginate) and no lines on head, only black edged blue spots (vs. 3–5 blue lines, often broken into spots across the head).
