Characteristic features:
Colour:

Greyish with yellowish brown blotches, dark blotches or bars sometimes on body, fins often spotted.

Size:

Up to 55 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo–West Pacific, in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral and rocky reefs, from 100 to 180 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds on bottom dwelling invertebrates and small fishes.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught with bottom longlines and bottom trawls.

Similar species:

A distinct species easily identifiable by having a combination of a forked caudal fin with broadly rounded lobes, a deep body, dorsal and anal fins with 10 soft rays and pectoral fins with 14 soft rays.
