Characteristic features:
Colour:

Head and body pale brown covered in close-set, polygonal dark brownish spots; 4–5 darker brown bars on body sometimes present; all fins with larger, darker spots, except spinous dorsal fin that is patterened similar to body.

Size:

Up to 53 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coral reefs from 1 to 200 m depth.

Similar species:

A distinct species, easily identified by having head and body pale, covered with small close-set polygonal dark brownish spots; 4–5 darker brown bars on body sometimes present and fins with large black spots.
