Characteristic features:
Colour:

Adults grey to greyish brown, anterior half of soft dorsal fin and lower lobe and upper tip of caudal fin black. Juveniles brownish with 3 narrow pale stripes.

Size:

Up to 100 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Close to reefs, to 50 m depth.

Biology:

Adults usually solitary, although sometimes found in pairs.

Diagramma pictum differs in having 10 or 11 dorsal-fin spines (vs. 12 or 13) and head and body grey, sometimes with yellow to golden orange spots on head and dark spots on soft dorsal fin and caudal fins (vs. body of adults grey to greyish brown with whitish speckling).
