Characteristic features:
Colour:

Silver-blue dorsally, silvery below; dark blotch on upper edge of operculum; fins mostly dusky; juveniles with 5 or 6 dark bands on body.

Size:

Up to 50 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Shallow coastal waters, less than 70 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on crustaceans and cephalopods.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught primarily with trawls.

Ulua mentalis differs in having gill rakers on upper limb of first gill arch 23–27 (vs. 16–21) and tongue without central band of villiform teeth (vs. with villiform teeth).

Carangoides differ in having gill rakers of moderate length and shape (vs. long and feather-like, and project into mouth alongside tongue) and total gill rakers on first gill arch 21–37 (vs. 54–86).
