Characteristic features:

Colour:

Silver-blue dorsally, silvery below; dark blotch on upper edge of operculum; fins mostly dusky; juveniles with 5 or 6 dark bands on body.

Size:

Up to 50 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Shallow coastal waters, less than 70 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on crustaceans and cephalopods.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught primarily with trawls.

Similar species:

Atropus mentalis
Longrakered trevally

Ulua mentalis differs in having gill rakers on upper limb of first gill arch 23–27 (vs. 16–21) and tongue without central band of villiform teeth (vs. with villiform teeth).
