Characteristic features:
Colour:

Silvery green-blue above, paler below; 5 or 6 dusky bands on sides; sometimes with yellow spots on sides. Dorsal- and anal-fin tips dark blue to dusky; pelvic fins whitish; caudal fin yellow-green, trailing edge dark.

Size:

Up to 70 cm TL.

Distribution:

Indo-West and Central Pacific in tropical waters.

Habitat:

Coastal waters, from the surface to 60 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on benthic crustaceans and small fishes. Occur singly or in small groups, swims in shallow waters off sandy beaches and waters surrounding coral reefs.

Indonesian fisheries:

Caught mainly by gill nets and traps.

Turrum fulvoguttatum differs in having the scaleless breast area long ventrally, extending well beyond pelvic-fin origin (vs. short ventrally, not extend beyond pelvic-fin origin).

Turrum gymnostethus differs in having the scaleless breast area separated from scaleless pectoral-fin base by a broad band of scales (vs. scaleless breast area uninterrupted to scaleless pectoral-fin base) and few brown or golden spots sometimes present midlaterally (vs. 5 or 6 distinct dusky bands on sides of adults with small, numerous yellow and orange spots on sides, mostly above lateral line).
